Well written speculative fiction that makes you think
"Nic Plume continues to hone her writing skills in the same way her characters hone their fighting skills. I've read all of her specualtive fiction stories; Prowler is the best yet and the earlier ones were excellent. The story is set in a dystopian yet familiar future with technology that seems achievable in the next decades or in centuries, dependent on the speed and scope of scientific breakthroughs. Luca is a Prowler, part of a paramilitary team that keeps the peace through nonviolent intervention, and when that doesn't work, through intimidation and force. There is also tribal tension between urban and country dwellers, City and Wilde, that Nic highlights in dialogue that rings true and a plot that grabs you until the very end, leaving you wishing for more. I found myself immersed in Luca's predicaments and then questioning my tribal world view as well as my sense of loyalty to my collegues, neighbors, and tribe. I'm really looking forward to the next Prowler book."

Wenn die Grenze zwischen Feind und Verbündetem ununterscheidbar ist, wird es kompliziert.

Es war ein Routineeinsatz - bis ein Hinterhalt den Spezialeinheitenkontigent der Einsatzgruppe dezimierte.
Nach sechs Monaten im tiefen Weltraum kehrte die Intergal-Flotte zurück um ihre Aufgabe zu beenden: die Besetzung des Planeten durch das Travers zu beenden und dem Volk von Tinaree Freiheit und Selbstverwaltung zurückzugeben. Als Bonus konnten sie vier Mitglieder der zerstörten SF-Einheiten bergen. Die Dinge liefen endlich wie geplant... Oder doch nicht?
Taylor und sein Team entkamen den nicht so zarten Gnaden ihrer Bewacher und schafften es zurück zur Flotte, aber ihre Rückkehr war nicht so freundlich wie sie es erwartet hatten. Stattdessen fühlte es sich eher so an, als wären sie in feindliches Gebiet einer anderen Art vorgedrungen.
Kommandeur Richards war an Komplikationen gewöhnt, aber nach seiner umfangreichen Vorarbeit als Integrals Verbindungsmann zur Widerstandsbewegung von Tinaree hätte diese Mission überschaubar sein sollen. Aber Kuriositäten sind selten Zufälle, und alte Gewohnheiten sterben schwer. Als sich die Besonderheiten des Hinterhalts und die anschließenden Ereignisse um Taylor und sein Team häuften, nahm Richards Notiz davon.
Während Taylor und sein Team darum kämpfen, zu heilen und sich wieder in die Flotte eingliedern, nutzt Richards sein wahres Spezialgebiet und eine günstig platzierte, hochqualifizierte Ressource, um weitere Nachforschungen anzustellen. Während er tiefer gräbt, kommen akzeptierte Wahrheiten ins Wanken und Umstände von Ereignissen werden undurchsichtig, bis die Grenze zwischen Feind und Verbündetem verschwimmt.
Handelt es sich um eine Reihe zufälliger Ereignisse oder ist es etwas viel Bedrohlicheres?

Nic Plume has written a convincing yet sensitive story about post traumatic stress and suicide set in the future but with implications today. If I were king, I’d implement the book’s comprehensive psychological support system as well as change the current up-or-out (promotion or discharge) Napoleonic-era personnel system to one allowing soldiers to move up and down ranks or stay at a rank or job that is personally best for them.

A good story dealing the the psychology of soldiers; PTSD, survivors guilt and combat stress- but also the Brotherhood of Warriors and the support that brings. Healing cannot happen in a vacuum.

This book was actually quite hard to put down. The story is - on the surface - a simple one, but the author does an excellent job of putting the reader into the main character's mind. The story has several layers, and it is told by someone who is really good at all the minor and elaborate details that makes a story compelling, as well as showcasing that she actually puts a lot of effort into the character building and thought processes.
